Dr. Lew-Starowicz, why is it important to exercise?

Michał Lew-Starowicz, MD, PhD: Regular physical activity is one of the fundamental ways to prevent lifestyle diseases such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and hypertension; it also has a very positive effect on mood, sexual activity, and hormonal balance.

In modern society, more and more people work in a seated position, and we increasingly rely on public transportation, including cars, where we usually sit. We also spend a great deal of time in front of a computer.

A more vigorous form of activity provides a significant counterbalance to a sedentary lifestyle. It cannot completely replace other forms of movement, which is why it is also advisable to frequently get up from your desk or computer and take breaks from work.

However, sports offer an opportunity to effectively boost metabolism, including burning off the calories consumed in meals during more intense exertion, thereby also helping to prevent obesity.

The most recommended forms are moderate physical activities, such as running, swimming, cycling, and… sexual activity.

Do you regularly engage in sports or physical activity, Doctor? If so, what kind?

MLS: Despite my very demanding work schedule, I try to find time for it, and this mainly involves swimming, running, and cycling, as well as various other seasonal activities such as skiing, sailing, and trekking.
